Summer Plans for Children/Youth

The schedule is already full of plans for service and fun for our children and youth this summer.  Contact Pastor Melanie for more information.

Peace Village Interfaith Day Camp
June 28-July 2, 2010
Peace Village is our interfaith day camp that focuses on peacemaking for one week during the summer.  FCC organizes this camp with Temple Beth Israel and  other faith groups in our community. Children of all backgrounds and faith traditions are invited to participate in this week of exploring the ways of peace; both inner peace and with our neighbors and our planet. If you have questions, contact Pastor Melanie Oommen at 541-345-8741 or melanieo@fcceugene.org.

Peace Village finishes successful week
More than 60 children, 20 teen counselors, and adult teachers, artists, storytellers, religious leaders, snack makers, lunch makers, and helpers of all kinds too numerous to count gathered together the week of June 28-July 2 to create a Peace Village.

Highlights of the week included:  storytelling by Kelly Terwilliger; teaching by spiritual leaders Ibrahim Hamide, Arun Toke, Rev. Oswin of the Eugene Buddhist Priory, Pastor Melanie, and Rabbi Yitzhak Husband-Hankins (who hosted all of Peace Village at Temple Beth Israel on Thursday);  service projects to South Hills Rehabilitation Center, the GrassRoots Garden, MECCA, and First Place Family Center; painting peace chairs and writing poetry with guest artists Betsy Wolfston and Kelly Terwilliger; nature study with Anna Bradley of Re-Wild Eugene; non-violent conflict resolution with Carly Bertelson and ManyHands Maloney; media literacy with Lisa Iacovetta; nutrition study with Carrie Janes; yoga with Paul Simon; a lunch prepared by the children for all the families on the last day under direction of Julian Johnston of Café Soriah, and so many beautiful moments of friendships made and understanding built.

It was a remarkable week, and we are so grateful for the teen counselors, who mentored and guided the children through the week: and for all who did their part to create the Village, including Cin Chubb, who coordinated volunteers and registration and was available for whatever was necessary; and Mary Mowday, who coordinated the snacks for the children.  There are so many to thank—many hands and hearts make Peace Village!

Summer Fun Camp
July 18-22, 2010

This is First Congregational's longest running program for youth.  Summer Fun Camp pairs high school youth with children from families who are experiencing homelessness, for five days of summer fun at our Central Pacific Conference's Camp Adams.  High school youth plan and lead the experience which includes crafts, games, swimming, crawdad fishing, and hiking...all the things that make summer camp renewing and fun.  In the process, transformative relationships of compassion and joy are nourished.  For more information, contact Pastor Melanie Oommen, 541-345-8741.   We are still looking for male counselor applicants, so please apply below as soon as possible
