"Lord, When was it that we saw you hungry...?" Matthew 25:44
These are really wonderful opportunities for families to volunteer together. It’s also a good way for our new members to get to know others in our church community. Although we have many wonderful, long-time volunteers from our church who help with these efforts below, we are always looking for more people to help. |

Through our efforts, food that would ordinarily be thrown away is “rescued” and made available to families in our community who struggle to put food on the table. Our church provides volunteers on the 3rd Monday evening of each month to help re-package food that has been donated to Food For Lane County by various organizations and businesses in the community. In addition, each Sunday's coin offering in the plate is also sent to Food for Lane County . Sign up after worship if you would like to help, or call Mary Mowday (541-485-6509). This is a great place for families to serve together!
The Dining Room (Food for Lane County)
In 2011, First Congregational volunteered 164 hours in The Dining Room! Nicely done!
The Dining Room is our responsibility the first Monday of each month. It is located across the street from WOW Hall near the corner of Lincoln and Broadway. The parking lot faces a very large mural. New Training below...
Our next night to volunteer is: Monday, February 6, 2012
The Dining Room sign up sheet can be found in the narthex.
- The first shift is from 1:00 - 3:15. During that time we prepare the fruit and vegetables for the meal, wrap dinnerware in napkins, fold aprons, and put out flowers and news papers.
- The second shift is from 3:00 - 5:00. During that time we serve the meal. The meal is always a hot, good smelling, delicious meal that has both vegetarian and meat entrees. We serve the people as they come through the line to eat.
- The third shift is from 5:00 - 7:00. This is the last shift and again we serve the meal. We also help with some clean-up chores.
Workers must wear closed-toed shoes. Aprons are provided. It is a wonderful experience that we are blessed to provide. If you are interested and want more information contact Joanne through the church office, 541-345-8741.
New Volunteer Training At The Dining Room
We will hold a Language and Sensitivity training for all volunteers and staff at The Dining Room. We are required by federal law to begin working towards requirements to create a more diverse and accessible Dining Room. You may have seen some bi-lingual signs popping up around the Diner, or heard about our Hispanic Outreach night; those are just a small piece of the puzzle to assure that we are truly a Dining Room for everyone.
