Fall Music Ministries

Photo of Chancel ChoirHappy fall from the music department! As the 2017-2018 program year kicks off in September, there are many opportunities to connect and get involved with music groups. There is something for everyone – from Sunday Schoolers to children’s choir, for beginning singers and instrumentalists to classically trained musicians to an intergenerational band that jams by ear – be sure and check out the many upcoming musical offerings!

THIRD SUNDAY CHOIR is a monthly group of any interested singers who meet in the sanctuary at 9:00 a.m. on the third Sunday of each month to learn a simple song that we then sing in that morning’s 10:00 a.m. worship service. This is an all-comers group for anyone, and is a great introduction for those new to FCC music.  Music background is helpful, but not necessary. Third Sunday Choir will begin on Sunday, September 17 at 9:00 a.m. Y’all come sing!

Photo of choirCHANCEL CHOIR is FCC’s flagship ensemble, and sings in most Sunday worship services from September through early June. Membership is open to anyone high school age and older who can match pitch (carry a tune/be able to follow individual parts) and takes seriously the commitment of regular attendance. A background in music/singing is recommended, but not required. There is no formal audition, but new singers will be asked to meet with the director to hear range and help place you in the right section. Feel free to attend a rehearsal or two to ‘test drive’ whether membership is right for you. We rehearse Wednesday nights from 7:00-8:15 p.m. in FCC’s Wheeler Room, with our first rehearsal on Wednesday, September 6.

Photo of Festival Choir in robesFESTIVAL CHOIR combines all singers high school age and older to present special music during the Advent and Lenten seasons. We rehearse on Sunday mornings at 11:00 a.m. and Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. for around six weeks leading up to our presentations. This is a great opportunity for those who love to sing these classics, but don’t have time to commit to regular attendance.  Past presentations have included Taize-inspired services, Appalachian carols, gospel with band, and choral/orchestral masterworks with chamber orchestra (ie Vivaldi’s Gloria, Schubert’s Mass in G). Rehearsals will begin in late October. Stay tuned to next month’s Shalom and bulletin announcements for further details!

Photo of House BandHOUSE BAND is a group of instrumentalists and singers who play primarily by ear, and present occasionally in worship services, or sometimes just jam sessions. Rehearsals will take place most second and fourth Thursdays of the month at 5:30 p.m. in the Wheeler Room; there will be rehearsals on September 14 and 28. Bring your instrument and check us out!

Coach: Vicki Brabham

All are welcome – Hand Bells are an accessible way for even the uninitiated to take part in making music. The bells ring in service about once a month.

Photo of Joyful Noise MusicalJOYFUL NOISE (Children’s Choir) Calling all singers/dancers/actors/kids who want to have fun! Joyful Noise will be starting the program year on Sunday, September 17. We are a choir for children ages 6-12 but we have never turned away a 6th or 7th grader who’s interested in continuing to be a part of Joyful Noise! JN singers are dismissed from the Sunday worship service at the Offertory on most Sundays, and practice in the chapel from approx. 10:20-11:15 a.m.. The choir participates in the worship service roughly once a month. We conclude our season with a Spring Musical Extravaganza that’s come to be a meaningful part of the church year for congregation and singers alike.  We hope to see many returning singers as well as new students who are interested in being a part of this fun and vital ministry.

Directors: Debi Noel, Jennifer Sellers

Here’s to a great year of making music together!
